Located adjacent to Lapu-Lapu City is the Mactan Export Processing Zone (MEPZ), an industrial tax-free zone that opened last 1979. The MEPZ includes approximately 35 business ventures, about 50 percent of which are Japanese-owned such as Asahi Pentax, Taiyo Yuden, NEC, and National Semiconductors. Other well-known locators are Fairchild Semiconductors, TMX, and United Technologies.
The MEPZ is divided into two divisions, MEPZ 1 and MEPZ 2. From six (6) firms in 1986,there are now over 100 firms located at MEPZ, employing close to 40,000 workers and generating export sales of $1.5 Billion in 1999.
